 Where should to stay?

Hue is a very safe city, so you do not need much to worry about. It is very common as other cities in Vietnam, still at night time caution should be used with any offers of transportation.

There are so many cheap traveler hotels and mid-market hotels in Hue, as well as a couple of expensive giants. The largest cluster is around the short lane of Pham Ngu Lao (including Le Loi, Hung Vuong, Chu Van An, Nguyen Cong Tru). It’s not quite as big (or backpackery) as its HCMC namesake, but still a definite tourist magnet. Across the river, near the citadel there are a few budget hotels on and around Dinh Tien Hoang. Here are some accommodations for preference:

What should to buy?

A item we should buy in Hue is the Vietnamese Nón lá, the conical-shaped hat made by woven palm leaves. The hat has been around almost as long as the country and is worn by men and women everywhere. The lighter the hat is the more elegant the look. In Hue especially, the hat makers insert poems into the weaves and the poem can only be seen when the hat is held up to the sunlight, making it even more special.
